Pomegranate fruit (Punica granatum L.) is a rich source of ellagitannins (punicalagin) and it has extensively been used in traditional medicine.
Punicaceae family includes 1 genus and 2 species, including Punica granatum (edible pomegranate) indigenous to Iran and Mediterranean, and Punica protopunica (inedible) endogenous to Socotra islands in Pacific Ocean. The genus Punica was derived from the roman name for Carthage, and the word pomegranate means apple (“pomum”) and seeded (“granatus”).

Indications
INFLAMMATION DISEASES
It is widely accepted that pomegranate intake can provide significant health benefits, mainly for chronic inflammatory diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal colitis, osteoarthritis and metabolic disorders (type 2 diabetes and obesity).
Pomegranate produces a significant increase in myeloperoxidase activity, related to attenuation of the
recruitment of neutrophils and its influx into inflamed gastrointestinal tissue, and it showed an important antioxidant capacity for multiple mechanisms of action, attributed to its high content of polyphenols, such as punicalagin. Moreover, the antiinflammatory effects are associated with a reduction in the production of inflammatory mediators, NO and inflammatory cytokines, and downregulation the mTOR downstream pathway. The antinociceptive effect has also been demonstrated.
Pomegranate consumption can improve physical function and stiffness and decrease breakdown
cartilage enzymes. In addition, it can accelerate muscle recovery after intensive training program and shown an ergogenic effect with an increase training volume.
OTHER APPLICATIONS
The beneficial effects of pomegranate have also been observed for hypertension, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s disease) and bacterial infections (included multidrug resistant bacterial human pathogens). It is also known for its wound healing properties, by increase fibroblast migration and proliferation, formation of collagen and angiogenesis, and protective effects against ultraviolet radiation induced damage to human skin.
Pomegranate extracts have a significant antibacterial effect on common oral bacterial pathogens, mainly Streptococcus mutans, the main microorganism responsible for dental plaque and caries. Pomegranate inhibits the growth of cariogenic bacteria and at sub-bactericidal concentrations, inhibits the biofilm formation and, acid and extracellular polysaccharides production by this bacteria.
Moreover, it has positive effects on enteric probiotic bacteria, enhancing growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species. Synergistic action was observed between pomegranate and antibiotics.
